Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) may find itself with no option but to destroy the 100-tonne beef consignment that was sent to the European Union and later recalled because it contained high levels of Salinomycin, Acting CEO Dr Akolang Tombale confirmed in an interview yesterday.

As negotiations between the BMC and the recipients of the consignment at the EU continue, the possibility of the beef being destroyed rises. The beef, which was exported in June last year, is being kept in cold storage somewhere in the Netherlands but it can only be returned to Africa if it has a certificate of safety.

"For the consignment to be transported back, the recipients should issue us with a certificate or documentation confirming that it has been in their custody and that it has not been manipulated or tampered with," Tomabale told Mmegi yesterday. "The consignment was kept there for a long time and the custodian did not regularly keep the recipients (EU agents) updated on its status. But we are still discussing the issue."
