74 light industrial plots handed to SPEDU

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The town council has handed over 74 light industrial plots to Selebi Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU) four years after the project's implementation.

The P78 million project by the town council is expected to house small business owners operating from their homes with a view of improving the economy of the town. The cost includes that of developments in Mekorong.Deputy mayor Maxwell Kelebetse said the council was allocated the plot by the Ministry of Lands and Housing to develop into a light industrial site.  On August 22, the project was handed over to SPEDU. SPEDU and the council through their twinning process would come up with the criteria for allocations of those plots”, he said.

He added that the delay in allocation of the plots since the implementation of the project in 2007 was because of processes to do with the Department of Lands. We now want to see progress with SPEDU because the project cannot continue unutilised anymore, he noted.  Director of Lands Department, Ian Tema, said the light industrial plots are for local entrepreneurs not investors. "We SPEDU was set up. We received a letter from SPEDU last year informing us that they wanted those light industrial plots," he said. Tema said that the delay in allocation was because of the slow internal processes. SPEDU’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Kenneth Boikhutswane, said the plots will be sold at a minimum of P150, 000 each. "Our interest is that they should be allocated to people who have interest in developing the economy of Selebi-Phikwe region.
