3,000 jobs lost and counting

Up to 3,000 workers have been retrenched in Botswana since the beginning of the year, due to the world credit crunch. Of these about 1,764 are in the mining sector where seven companies involved in exploration, cutting and polishing of diamonds have laid-off workers.


Half of the 16-diamond cutting and manufacturing companies have retrenched 441 workers. To date, 32 companies have formally informed the government that they have retrenched with 21 others expected to follow suit.

The following diamond polishing and cutting companies have retrenched: Yerushaimi Bros Diamonds (138), Diamonds Manufacturing Botswana (93), DDA of Botswana (78), Suashish Diamonds Botswana (15) and DTC Botswana (15). Other diamond cutting and polishing companies that have laid off workers, but are yet to provide the Commissioner of Labour with figures include Steinmertz Diamonds Botswana, Leo Schachter Botswana and Lazare Kaplan Botswana.
