30 arrested were not detained, says police

The 30 people arrested on Monday were not detained, but simply taken in for questioning, says Superintendent Kevin Mookodi, Central Police Station Commander in Gaborone.

The mass arrests took place at the Gaborone City Council offices in a random swoop as the police officers, in riot gear and guns, had just dispersed striking workers from the Gaborone Secondary School. They surrounded people outside the city council premises and arrested them.

"We didn't detain them. At the moment no one has been charged with anything. You should note that we took them in for questioning. We found that most of them, at the time they were arrested, were actually at work at GCC," Mookodi told Mmegi.
