Months after classes started at various tertiary institutions, at least 2,000 progressing students at various institutions are still to receive their first allowances. So far, other students sponsored by the government have received three monthly living allowances (August, September, October), as well as a book and stationery allowance.

Disgruntled and broke students have told The Monitor that, since schools started, they have been spending precious time at either the Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF) offices in Block 6 or the students bank First National Bank (FNB) Student Services Centre, trying to get to the bottom of the problem.

They say that the DTEF tells them that they have submitted lists of names of students that still need allowances to the FNB, but when the students get to the bank, they are told that the DTEF has not submitted their names.Further, the students say they are unable to pay rent, pay for transport to get to school and are unable to buy groceries and toiletries.
