With the help of television channels such as National Geographic and Discovery many have had an opportunity to witness and learn about different cultures. Last weekend, Gaborone residents experienced a different, exciting religious and cultural parade called the Ratha Yatra.

The Ratha Yatra parade took place at the residential area of Phase Two.  The festival celebration left residents surprised as they asked themselves what exactly was taking place.  All they saw was a multi-racial crowd parading and pulling a colourful 14-metre high chariot with statues and a man singing in a foreign language they did not understand.  Some of the residents were impressed as they joined the parading crowd.

Ratha Yatra is a Hindu festival that involves moving deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshana, the statues that were on the chariot.  When explained Ratha means chariot and Yatra means journey.  The parade lasted for close to three hours with the jovial crowd sing and playing instruments such as drums, tambourines and trumpets.
