While everyone was busy with the nare jokes, Gaborone was hosting its biggest and longest running arts festivals in Botswana, the Maitisong Festival. The festival was in its 29th year and as is the norm it brought together international and local artists who brought an exciting line-up of events featuring theatre, music, dance, slam poetry and comedy.

The events were held at multiple venues around the city. Although most events were poorly attended the arts standard this year was very impressive. There was general improvement in the performances right from students’ acts to professional artists.

The director of Maitisong, Gao Lemmenyane says he was generally pleased with the event citing the impressive improvement in the artists. “Although there was poor attendance due to lack of funding the standard of the performances has really improved this year,” he said.
