Political, social issues addressed through poetry

Spoken word artists went all in as they addressed political and social issues through poetic pieces during the Maitisong Festival Spoken word session. The spoken word session comprised of artists such as Ngozi Chikura, Gomolemo Motsamai, Gerald ‘Synik’ Mugwenhi, American poet Miles Hodges and songstress Mpho Sebina.

With the on-going atrocities of white cops shooting black people in America, Hodges was quick to recite about these issues on his set. “Spoken word has the ability to change the world, tell our stories and inspire a moment of global healing, kids in my country do not need to be shot by people that are supposed to be protecting them because of their skin colour; this is why I write,” said Hodges.

While reciting he would get emotional at times with tears appearing in his eyes as he went all in talking of black love poems. He went on to talk about struggles that young adolescent males face in various communities.  “Every boy had a smiling father to dribble him around, every watch could stop if you please, every set of five fingers had a warm twin that could fit but since then I have spent too many Sundays with the sun and girls just looking for d*ck thoughts and now I could do is to spend time writing black love poems,” Hodges recited on an untitled poem. With the recent disappearance of US$15 billion in Zimbabwe from the diamonds proceeds Zimbabwean poet Synik recited about the corruption, political instability and economic collapse in Zimbabwe on a piece titled “Greed” which was more of a hip hop verse.
