Legendary artist, Frank Lesokwane who is popularly known as Franco, expressed deep sorrow for the passing on of his longtime friend.
“I am deeply hurt by this loss,” Franco said of Jeff. The Kwasa Kwasa hit maker recalled their journey that began in the 1980s at Tsogang Primary School in Broadhurst.
From childhood friends to being soldiers in the same unit at the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), their bond was unbreakable.
“We joined the BDF band around 1992 and later joined Nata Capricorn together. Jeff was more than a friend, he was my brother,” Franco shared in an emotional interview.
Franco added that although death is part of God’s plan, the pain it brings never gets easier. He offered his full support and comfort to the Matheatau family during this difficult time.
Botswana Musicians Union representative, Fresh Lesokwane, also reflected on his close ties with the late Matheatau.
“We met at the BDF Band in 1999 and later formed Yakho Band in 2001,” he said.
After leaving the military they devoted themselves fully to music, building a solid foundation in the industry.
“Jeff was very loving and caring. I last saw him in April and it breaks my heart that he’s no more,” he said extending heartfelt condolences to the family, adding that they were available to offer support.
Matheatau’s long-time guitarist, Kapenda Katuta, was struggling to accept that his former colleague had departed.
“I can’t believe my brother is really gone,” he said. Katuta revealed that his journey to Botswana in 2002 was at Matheatau’s invitation.
“He wanted someone he could trust for his second album and that’s how our partnership began,” the guitarist explained.
The duo lived together, worked side by side and went on to record multiple albums and recruiting artists like Slizer and Chris Manto 7.
Over time, Katuta became like a family member, contributing heavily to the growth of Matheatau’s musical journey.
“We had just spoken three weeks ago about reviving our music journey,” he added.
