Twenty-four-year old motswako and hip pop artist Phakiso Makhiwa who goes by the moniker PK Maada confesses to having used and sold drugs. He mainly used rock (cocaine) and weed (marijuana) to stay current in the entertainment industry.

“I was in school at the time doing my degree at University of Botswana until I got mixed up with the wrong crowd who were considered ‘cool’ at the time. They introduced me to a life of misery; alcohol and drug abuse,” he said. Makhiwa told Showbiz that he so wanted to be rich and famous that he started to deal in drugs as they were in high demand.  Dealing in the sale of drugs cost him the attention he took away from his studies. He later got his results as fail and discontinue at UB.

“I was a junky and even my music career was suffering as most of the songs I made were of hate and at times I would want to start ‘beef’ with other artists because I was miserable,” he said. He pointed out that his turning point was when he received jail time after an arrest by the Francistown police for selling drugs.  “Somebody informed the police about my business and soon I was the most wanted man by the police.  One day I was caught with these drugs and I was taken to prison.  That is the day I realised that this is not the life I want to be known to have lived,” he said.  PK Maada made a mark in the music industry in 2010 when he realised a single called Crunk Motswako, which topped music chats in radio stations, then he got a lot of features from other artists.  Then he offered another banger titled Foroman, which he says, was also a hit in social media.   “I then released another single called Sefaindi, which I believe summed up my life about being a drug abuser.  I also recorded another hit called Segametsi,” he said. Makhiwa is currently working on his first album, which he decided to call Foroman. He says he believes he is now a changed man and is determined to change the lives of other young men out there.  “Being a public figure comes with titles of being a role model so I now read motivational books and mostly the bible to remain focused and avoid doing bad things,” he said.  He said he now believes he has rebranded well and has a classy image that will entice the audience, particularly those in the corporate world, to once again take him seriously.
