Embracing female art

Women have always been used as subjects in visual arts to enchant the male gaze. The society has doubted their courage and perseverance in this field, but nowadays more women are coming out to prove that fine art has nothing to do with gender. Mmegi staffer MOMPATI TLHANKANE interviewed a young woman from Serowe who went all the way to pursue her passion.

Emang ‘LadyArtist’ Maranyane is a promising talent who has managed to overcome the limitations of her gender in order to excel in a field dominated by males.  She quit her studies as an accounting student at the University of Botswana (UB) to pursue her passion and build her artistic reputation.

 Arts and Culture sat down with LadyArtist about her journey so far, which started in junior school when she was required to choose an optional subject. “I didn’t know what to choose and I accidentally choose music and art,” she recalled.
