The 16th annual Ditshwanelo Human rights film festival featured a locally produced film for the first time ever during a screening last weekend. The 10 minutes documentary film entitled Mbako ke mang was created to make awareness and promote tolerance for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community through film.

Local Film school, AFDA students produced the documentary and it is about a young man called Mbako who feels trapped in his body.

He identifies as a woman and wants to have a family and children who call him ‘Mommy’. He is expressive, openly gay and perfectly comfortable in his own skin. At the same time, he lives in fear of being discriminated against and physically assaulted because of his sexual orientation.  He finds himself at odds with Batswana society, which continues to outlaw the practice of same sex relations. This film-is an exploration of gender performance and identity, striving to promote awareness of the human right to express sexual orientation according to one’s subjective and individual convictions.
