Debt: The devil is in the details

Don’t Worry, Go Tla Siama, is a personal finance training manual, authored by Albert Gaopelo. The book seeks to give financial guidance or education to the masses who might find themselves overwhelmed by debt, and perhaps don’t see a way out. Many studies have revealed that many Botswana households are heavily indebted, and that the culture of borrowing far exceeds that of saving.

In his book, Gaopelo emphasises the importance of financial literacy, which in turn will lead to individuals having a healthier financial standing. The book has 19 chapters each of which discusses different topics. The chapters touch on issues such as financial literacy, the role played by an individual in the economy, recession, banks and how they make their money.

While some might argue that the author looks at the issue in simplistic terms, the book will most definitely benefit those who are in debt, be it those who owe a little or those who owe a lot.  As the author puts it: “This book is dedicated to all Batswana who find themselves completely stuck in the jaws of debt. It caters for all categories of borrowers, from those who owe a little to those who are the ‘Premier League of debt’. This book is dedicated to the police, soldiers, nurses, doctors, teachers, engineers and government employees who are being mercilessly milked by some credit providers. When you are in debt, your future earnings do not belong to you.  In other words you have sold your future potential.  Debt if not managed, increases the chances of you retiring a poor person.” (Page 8)
