Vincent van Gogh, a famous Dutch post-impressionist painter once said, “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together”. This remark by this great man became apparent as TOM KETLOGETSWE sat down with the reigning Thapong Artist of the Year (TAYA) queen to get an insight into her creative journey, experiences and issues surrounding the arts in Botswana

Kelebogile Marope, a 31-year-old cheerful sculptor, said she was surprised to capture the coveted TAYA award in 2015. “I was shocked by the announcement. In fact I did not hear my name when it was announced and only realised what had happened when my dad was jumping up and down in excitement. I was literally shaking when I received the award,” she said.

Marope, who possesses a masters and honours degree in Fine Art from Rhodes University in South Africa, said her participation was out of curiosity. She said the whole experience was enriching especially when one of the judges from Zimbabwe offered constructive criticism of the artworks entered in the exhibition.
