A Woman of Many Firsts is a play based on the life of one of Botswana’s most celebrated women, Dr Gaesitwe Chiepe. It was staged at Maruapula school Moving Space on Saturday.

In what was a powerful 45-minute drama, Chiepe’s granddaughter Moduduetso Lecoge played the lead, Chiepe. The 26-year-old Lecoge tracks Chiepe’s progression from a young Motswana girl from Serowe, who aspired to be the best and the first black woman to achieve in what was then the preserve of the whites.

The play goes on to depict Chiepe’s progression through her schooling, career in education, administration, diplomatic service and politics right up until her retirement.  It starts with how she excelled at school and how the Bechuanaland Protectorate government sent her to high school and then university in South Africa during the apartheid era. The 90-year-old Chiepe achieved a lot of firsts from being a young girl in school to a working woman and in politics hence the title of the play. The play also looks at what it was like to be the only female Education Officer during her time to going up the ranks until she became the Director of Education.
