When the load of studies at pre-medicine school intensifies, 20-year-old Roy Matlhare takes to art to ease the burden.

That is how art, a passion he picked up as a primary school pupil, has become an important part of his life.“Art helps keep me sane when the pressure from books mounts. It helps me relax and maintain a stable mind,” he says.The young painter bemoans the way art is viewed in the country. He says if art paid well, he would be a full time artist.

“If I had a choice between a well-paying art career and medicine, I would definitely go for art,” he says. He had abandoned art until a visit to Thapong Visual Arts some two years ago resurrected his passion. This was shortly before his admission into pre-med school.
