Botswana grabs first gold

The men's volleyball team became the first side to grab gold for Botswana at the ongoing Region 5 Youth Games in Gaborone on Tuesday.

It has been a difficult start for Botswana, who were fifth on the medals table before the end of day on Tuesday, but there was good news when the men's volleyball team beat Namibia 3-1 to grab gold.

The team qualified for the final after beating South Africa 3-1 on Monday. Volleyball coach, Odirile Sibanda told Mmegi Sport that the win was an indication that boys can also bring positive results.

“Focus has always been on the girls' teams but now we are showing people that the boys have the potential to play at a higher level. This is a motivation to other youngsters that there is a future in volleyball,” he said.

Sibanda said his charges

managed to overcome their opponents by concentrating on block and outside attack. He said it was also important to study opponents and understand their plan.

“Six of my players are playing in the Mascom Volleyball League and playing against their age mates was smooth sailing. My wish is to see this team kept intact. They should be kept active even if there are no competitions. They can even be picked for the senior national team,” Sibanda said.

While it was good news from volleyball, it was not so encouraging from netball, as the team continued its losing streak, going down to Zambia and Malawi on Tuesday.
