President Ian Khama’s administration has moved swiftly to avert Bakgatla’s threat to disturb the 50th anniversary independence roving torch (molelo wa kgolagano) if the Presidential Taskforce on Bakgatla Bogosi does not give the morafe feedback.

Khama appointed the taskforce on Bakgatla chiefainship led by Kgosi Malope II of Bangwaketse in September 2014. The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Slumber Tsogwane, told Parliament recently that the taskforce met Kgosi Kgafela II of Bakgatla, Bakgatla and other interested groups to get their views on how the impasse between government and Bakgatla could be resolved.

Mmegi has gathered that Bakgatla mephato (regiments) had been mobilising to hit the government where it matters most if it did not present the report to the morafe. The plan was to bring into disrepute, the respected occasion of molelo wa kgolagano expected to go around the country until September this year. The roving torch is due in Mochudi on July 18.
