Zim Women Carry The Burden Of Birth And Survival In The Diaspora

As the inflation rate continues to gallop in Zimbabwe, hitting 2, 200 percent last week, life is becoming even tougher for the people of that country.

But as the saying goes, 'you hit a woman, you hit a rock', and Zimbabwean women are not about to give up. Trudging the streets in towns and the labyrinthine pathways villages, they have become a permanent feature throughout Botswana.

Their basic concern is to put food on the table for their families, and they will do practically anything to make sure their children do not starve. They have been accused of prostitution, and therefore of increasing the risk of HIV/AIDS both to themselves and to their 'clients'. However, charges of iniquity aside, these women are willing to do any 'piece job', from laundering clothes and spring-cleaning to prettifying Batswana women by plaiting their hair: "Ga o batli go loga sweetie?"
