Work and more work keeps Mma Mazile alive

In May 2006 staff writer TSHIRELETSO MOTLOGELWA spent time with legendary farmer Mma Mazile (Chenngwe Agnes Mazile) at her farm. This week Mma Mazile sadly passed away. To mark and celebrate this vivacious and never-say-die woman we republish the feature to pay homage to this great woman

Mma Mazile (Chenngwe Agnes Mazile) is 72 going on 73, who has time to sit and calculate exactly how long she has been on this earth when there are so many more important matters to take care of? Not Mma Mazile. After all there is work to be done.

The little RAV 4 station wagon hums along the road from Palapye. She squints behind thin-rimmed glasses to get a clearer view of the road rolling towards the car. On the passenger side beside her is a take-away box of lunch she just bought an hour ago. It is still sitting there, waiting for her to get a chance and perhaps take a bite of the pasta, beef stew and the cabbage salad. "Won't the food go bad from the heat? I never get time to eat. I haven't had a bite since I woke up," she announces, smiling almost naughtily, and angling her head such that she is half looking at the road ahead and half looking behind her shoulder.
