"Woman of steel" finds her niche in welding

FRANCISTOWN: Britain may have the "Iron Lady" in former premier Margaret Thatcher.Francistown has a "Woman of steel" in Lucy Malunga, who is in the business of contorting metal (welding) to suit her customers' needs.

Like politics, the welding business is dominated by hard-knuckled men and in most cases women only appear on the scene with a tray of tea and its accompaniment for the sweating males' sustenance. However, just like Thatcher who took to the helm of the United Kingdom, Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The Maid of Orlans" a folk heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint, and many other female heroines, Malunga is now a dominant figure in the Francistown welding industry.

A former guidance and counseling teacher at Tashata Junior Secondary School in Tati Siding, Malunga's was not a bed of roses when she started out on her journey in 2006. Referred in the welding circles as a "Woman of steel, the 49-year-old mother of four, was still at Tashata when she tentatively established "Lucy Steel", the company that is currently making waves in Area W. Malunga, however, was tongue-in-cheek about how successful her business is, but judging by the number of visitors dropping in to enquire, one would hazard to say there is vibrancy about the place.
