Will Boteti River Disappoint Villagers Again?

FRANCISTOWN: There was excitement, which turned into disappointment last year when residents of western Boteti waited in vain for their river to start flowing. Hope turned into despair after the Boteti River, a tributary of the mighty Okavango stopped at Moreomaoto, about 50 kilometres west of Rakops on the Maun-Orapa Road.

But last week, a health worker at the Rakops Primary Hospital, Salang Kgagamedi was confidence personified when he told Monitor that, at last he is hopeful the river will reach his village this time. "What I am confident about now is that even if it does not arrive this year, it is possible for it to flood all the way to Mopipi by next year. Since I was young, we used to know that the river would follow around February. So, it is possible it can start flooding by then and with the riverbed now soaked, it will move at greater speed and chances are high it will reach Mopipi," said 43-year-old Kgagamedi.

Last year he despaired and attributed the river's non-appearance to some people who have changed its traditional route.  That made him cast aspersions on the mental state of people who dreamt the river would ever reach Rakops.
