When pupil meets his hero in court

Friday is usually a slow working day. No one really wants to undertake working any taxing work especially on a Friday afternoon during month ends. Everyone is looking forward to the weekend and thinking of how to unwind.

But last Friday was different. It had to be. Wesson Manchwe was in court. For someone like me who grew up in Palapye and Mahalapye where Manchwe was accorded cult hero status, the weekend adrenalin could wait. There have been heroes in Mahalapye, most of them footballers and athletes. Then there was Manchwe. He was sometimes mentioned in the same league as the late opposition leader Dr Kenneth Koma. On this Friday he was in court with one of his proteges, attorney Duma Boko, albeit on different sides. Manchwe was to deliver his final submissions for the prosecution on a case of kidnapping. Cases of kidnapping are not common in Botswana and there is a possibility that this could be a first step in making legal precedent. What a way to start a weekend!
