FRANCISTOWN: Batswana's tendency to watch events, pleasant or unpleasant, unfold came to the fore the day riot police clashed with striking government workers last week Tuesday. On-lookers who included office workers, shop workers, taxi drivers and conductors, and even vendors at the bus rank lined the Blue Jacket Street, right from the Thapama Circle to the traffic lights opposite Shoprite Mall

As the police and the workers were sizing each other up, even the usually busy shoppers stopped their shopping businesses to gawk at the spectacle before them. Left wiping the bitter effects of teargas from their eyes, surveying injuries sustained while scaling walls, the on-lookers spent the day talking about what happened that day. An employee of Thapama Hotel told colleagues and whoever cared to listen that tear gas entered her eyes when she went to watch as the workers sang and toy-toyied while the police were preparing to launch their assault on them.
