Watermelon: the 'cinderella' nutritional powerhouse

Gadifele Motswaiso, a dietician at Francistown's Nyangagwe Referral Hospital stated that the abundance of water in watermelons is a remedy for fluid retention in human bodies.

"The other important factor about watermelons is the presence of magnesium in them. Scientists have proven that lack of Magnesium results in tension, sleep disorders, muscular cramping and eventually heart attacks accompanied by other serious illnesses," Motswagole said.

The dietician pointed out that though there are so many benefits derived from the watermelon, Batswana are generally not aware of such benefits. She further stated that they as hospitals have not found any evidence to say watermelon can be used for medicinal purposes, however. "Until then we will continue to treat it just like any other fruit.
