UB: Sanctuary for scholars and scholarship

Jerry Mudadi, Zimbabwe political affiliation unknown, was president of the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland local campus student representative council (SRC) when I arrived on the second year of its establishment in 1972.

The most exciting political event of the year was the man's 'deportation' to the then Rhodesia on the government official grounds that he was 'an illegal immigrant'.

The students - boys housed in batches of 16 at the Botswana Institute of Administration, and the girls across next to the old 'Q's, watched as the first leader of the university community was loaded into the back of an 'immigration' truck.
