The towering promise of the AU

The Organisation of African Unity, established at its founding conference in Ethiopia 45 years ago, has since been transformed into the African Union.Staff writer, TSHIRELETSO MOTLOGELWA, examines the development of the continental institution and believes that, like the tower that the founding father, Emperor Haille Selassie contributed to the organisation, the AU will stand firm in pursuit of the African ideals for which it stands.

ADDIS ABABA: When you walk into the African Union headquarters from the front gate, you see before you a giant tower. It'is a stoic thing, looking as it does like it has seen better times, and now it is nothing but purely functional.
