The state press is undemocratic

At Independence, the young nation of Botswana was linked to the rest of the world though a three-tier system of information gathering and dissemination.

The dominant source of information was the South African press, modelled on the overarching political system of apartheid or racial segregation as a form of state ideology. The 'Bantu World' was supposedly tailored to the needs of the 'non-whites' in their varieties.

There were the 'Indians' or Asiatics in Natal, and something of 'Coloured' colouration in the Western Cape.  Similarly, the radio stations broadcast along ethnic lines; for the Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Xhosa, Venda and others.
