The case against African Union

No less a person than Chinese Mao Tse-Tung said that the starting point of [constructive] criticism is self-criticism. The AU should mirror itself before criticising the ICC and planting windbreaks in the path of justice for Africans. As TOM ONIRO suggests, the continental body could make a giant leap ahead by first hewing logs in its own eyes before seeking to wipe out the speck in the international community's retina

Africa is in trouble. The 'Dark Continent' or 'mere geographical expression' is, as ex-British PM Tony Blair would rightly observe, a scar in the conscience of the world. And this is all because the continental body dedicated to "promote democratic principles and institutions, popular participation and good governance" is smothered by a club of butchers who have overstayed in power through stealing elections. They also abuse human rights and crush dissent with impunity. All these they do with wild and unbridled abandon.

The AU's malleability to making 21st Century blunders after blunders is astonishing as it is agonising. AU shields unimaginable atrocities that deeply shocks the conscience of humanity. African countries have raced to anarchy under the hawk eyes of the AU. There have been mass slaughter of civilians in Africa; all within its reach. Or, is it incompetence and negliglence?
