Spousal rape - the debate reborn

For years, debate has been raging on within Botswana over constitutionally recognising spousal rape - meritoriously splitting the country's conservatives and reformers.

Just when the issue looked to have been put to rest -Dr Onnalena Selolwane, a female senior sociology lecturer at the University of Botswana (UB), recently revived the issue.

The UB academic said that a married man has the right to sex with his wife, but "...you have no right to beat your wife and force sexual intercourse with her."This was at a Botswana Police Service (BPS) national symposium on the development of an effective law enforcement response to violence against women and children.
