South, but not south enough

Just when staff writer THALEFANG CHARLES thought he had seen it all, the continent throws another pleasant surprise onto his lap.

As I stood at Cape of Good Hope promontory inside the Table Mountain National Park, on a small cliff below the historic Cape Point Lighthouse, I thought I had finally reached the southernmost point of Africa. There were six children standing on the viewing area, a few meters above the sea level next to the 'new' lighthouse of Cape Point. "So this is it..." I said out loud as I excitedly pointed to both westerly and easterly directions of the water.

"This is where the mighty Atlantic and Indian oceans meet". Sensing my excitement, the elder one of the children shouted, "No, It's not!" He continued in his rich Western Cape accent, "Cape Agulhas is the southernmost point of Africa and it's about 160km from here" he blabbered as he pointed southwards.
