Small claims court offers immediate remedy

One would be excused for mistaking the newly established Small Claims Court for a family court that is usually filled to capacity at month-ends when it is time for mothers to collect maintenance fees for their children.

Situated on the premises of the Extension II Magistrates Court, scores of Batswana were found patiently waiting on benches in the court's reception to state their cases this week. The Small Claims Court, otherwise known as 'The People's Court', held its maiden hearing at the beginning of this month and has already registered 581 cases.

People come in large numbers to register their grievances at this court that has taken a considerable weight off other courts that have been inundated with cases.
