Politicians are starving - Mayor

Politicians are starving, and government should do something to make politics more attractive, the Mayor of Gaborone City Council, Haskins Nkaigwa, says.

Speaking at a council meeting last week, Nkaigwa said that politicians should be rewarded for their work so that they can refrain from participating in corrupt acts."Political representatives are starving and some have quit the political hardships of the opposition to join the ruling party out of financial distress, with promises for financial freedom," he said.

He added, "we have noticed recently that many politicians have been dragged before the courts for allegations of corruption." It is for these reasons that the councils should stand up and ask for better working conditions."We shall continue, ladies and gentlemen, to lobby government to improve the working conditions of councillors.
