Political parties in Botswana - 'the weakest link in democracy'

This year's general elections are unique in one respect - they have demonstrated clearly that despite the country's much vaunted democracy political parties , particularly the main ones, the BDP and the BNF are by far 'the weakest link' in the country's democracy.

The historic court case between the BDP President and his secretary general exposed the dictatorial nature of the constitution of a party which calls itself 'Democratic'. The rules governing the conduct of primary elections or failure by the leadership  to adhere to them leaves much to be desired. The BNF finds itself stuck with a treacherous leader despite the existence on paper of constitutional clauses on the right to immediate recall.

Obviously this means that the constitution is defective. In some instances on paper the party may appear to have a  democratic constitution and democratic rules governing primary elections and yet the leadership unashamedly and continuously tramples them underfoot in order to impose its puppets on the electorate. Khama's refusal to recognise his own central committee, merely on account of the fact that his faction was routed at the Kanye congress has set that party on an unprecedented path to self-destruction.
