Pick-ups smuggle goods to Zimbabwe

FRANCISTOWN: Pick-up vans with BA permits (which allow them to transport goods) are allegedly responsible for cross-border smuggling of stolen goods from Botswana to Zimbabwe.

It has emerged that Botswana Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers s at the Ramokgwebane border crossing do not check the pick-ups and Zimbabweans have taken advantage to smuggle stolen goods to their country.

Top officials at the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) have been made aware of these allegations by Francistown-Ramokgwebane route passenger transport operators during a meeting held at the DRTS conference room on July 30. Legitimate transport operators are afraid that their business is suffering because of the smuggling.
