Old Naledi project stalls

After spending a total of P6.3 million in compensating Old Naledi residents to make way for a reticulation project in the estate, the Gaborone City Council (GCC) finds itself racing against time.

The project should have started by April this year after the award of its tender, but so far, nothing has happened. The Chinese company, which won the P152 million tender is meant to complete the job by December 2010. But before things start moving, it seems brute force will have to be used against some of the residents of 99 affected households who have not re-adjusted their fences to allow work to begin.

Eleven of those households due to be relocated are yet to commit themselves to compensation packages offered by the GCC, while only one out of the 41 that committed themselves to the relocation exercise, have moved out of the area ear-marked for development.
