Nkgowe told Mmegi in an interview that the road to his success has not been easy as he had a troubled childhood.

"I had the misfortune of losing my siblings and I told myself that I should flee the country and relocate to Lesotho because I knew that the Basotho speak a language closely related to mine," he said. His quest for a better and presumably safer life led him to Stilfontein Gold Mine in South Africa where he worked as a locomotive driver. It was while working at the mines that his love for working with rocks and stones started.
