A couple of days before Independence Day this year, as the saga that was the Louis Nchindo corruption case unfolded, veteran judge David Newman, who was a witness for the defence, got gored by the prosecution's chief attack dog.

Kgosietsile Ngakaagae was concluding what he had started a few days earlier. With the precision of a skilled surgeon, he slowly pulled apart Newman under cross-examination.

In the sombre atmosphere of the courtroom, Magistrate Lot Moroka rested his chin on his palm, head slightly bowed, face deadpan, while state prosecutor Matshwenyego Phuthego sat back jotting down something every now and then. Nchindo's lawyer, Advocate Craig Webster, slowly paged through his thick folder while Ngakaagae went about dismantling the judge's profile.
