Nasha explains children bill

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Minister of Local Government Margaret Nasha last Thursday addressed a kgotla meeting in Selebi-Phikwe in which she explained the draft children's bill which she said has been met with mixed reactions because people do not understand what it seeks to address.

"It is evident that Batswana do not understand what I am saying about the bill. Botswana is part of the global world and subscribes to the United Nations hence the country signed an agreement of the UN Convention on the rights of children." She added that Botswana has also signed the African Charter on the rights and responsibilities of a child under the African Union.Nasha explained that agreements were signed because it was realised that there are serious problems concerning children that need to be addressed. The minister noted that there are still some countries that impose harmful labour practices on children and cited situations in civil war-torn nations where children as young as 12 years are made into solders. "Other countries still conduct female genital mutilations on children just for purposes of the sexual benefits of men. This traumatises them throughout their entire life."

The minister also emphasised that Botswana is never in the habit of signing agreements that it cannot implement hence those agreements will be implemented. She indicated that the 127- claused bill has not been published because her ministry wants to ensure that it is fully understood and internalised by everybody.
