My Dear Botswana...

Francistown is Botswana's second city. Often referred to as the "Capital of the North", Francistown was the centre of southern Africa's first gold rush, and is still surrounded by old and abandoned mines.The City of Francistown, popularly called 'Ghetto', is an administrative district. Below, Mmegi Correspondent GALE NGAKANE pays homage to his hometown and reminisces on his early days, shortly after Botswana gained it's independence.

I have no recollection of the day you were born, except from what the elderly tell me and what I read about your formative years, which were also my formative years. I was born two years earlier remember?
One such story was that on this day, people thought they could do what they liked at any time of the day while saying "re a ipusa" (we are self-governed).

When I started having an inkling about my surroundings, perhaps three or four years after you were born, some people in fact used the day to settle scores with their enemies.
