Moyo the irrepressible Maun magistrate everybody loves, hates

MAUN: It is 7:20pm Wednesday evening, soft winds are blowing and the sky is pregnant with clouds. This is a rare phenomenon in Maun, a place at the northwestern tip of Botswana known for its extreme temperatures.

At BonArrivee, a bar and restaurant facing the airport entrance, the man that I have an appointment with, Magistrate Nsikelelo Mafa Moyo, is sitting alone, holding a glass of some beverage. He looks pensive and casts a sombre, troubled figure - nothing like the normally bubbly magistrate that I have come to know.

Is he a real wolf in sheep's skin as community members allege? I ask myself as I take a seat opposite him. Greetings exchanged, hand ducks into the handbag, tape recorder on, pen and paper out, there is no time to waste as I pepper him with questions. This is the man who, if he had lived in the biblical times of the Pharisees, would have been stoned to death because of allegations that people make about him.
