MMADINARE: Though her memory seems to elude her, Mmabana Morotsi who turned 100 years early this month still enjoys good sight and hearing and leads a life free of diseases of civilisation like high blood pressure and sugar diabetes.

She says that during her time as a traditional midwife in Mmadinare, she would beat vessels with her assistants to produce a loud sound to drown the screams of women in labour.

That was necessary because giving birth was supposed to be a sacred event accorded utmost secrecy. Therefore, nobody near the 'labour room' should notice what is going on until the announcement of the newborn comes as a surprise.
