Mma-Go: The Somerset magwinya merchant

FRANCISTOWN: In Somerset East location of Francistown, there is a woman called 'Mma-Go'. The 'Go' here means to leave or depart.

But the gangly mother of 'Go' is not going anywhere fast. Since 1985, Mma-Go otherwise known as Lida Lentswe, 51, has become a permanent feature at the township where she sells 'magwinya' (fat cakes) in a ramshackle tuckshop.

She starts frying the cakes at exactly 8am everyday including Sundays. An extrovert to the core, she talks non-stop as she kneads the dough and drops in tennis ball-sized portions into a cauldron of oil under heated by the red-hot embers of mophane firewood.
