Media obsession for Khama is self-destructing

The last few weeks epitomised local newspapers' obsession for President Ian Seretse Khama. A cursory look through the pages of the mainstream newspapers reveals that they devote acres of space to the President every week. The stories appear on the news pages as well as the opinion-editorial (leader) pages.

The State President is normally the biggest newsmaker in his own country at any given time. When the President speaks, especially in public space, invariably what he says is news. Some people have even argued that what the President says is policy or the law. This shows how important the President is in the life of the nation.

It is, therefore, not surprising that media houses attach so much importance to reporting on the President.  They even devote staff to cover him wherever he goes. And the people who are assigned that task are normally senior journalists with years of experience behind them.
