Media and whistle blowers unprotected - BIDPA

The media has been hailed for playing a vital role in fighting corruption by informing and educating the public whilst at the same time providing leads for investigation.

A 2008 Botswana Institute for Policy Development Analysis (BIDPA) released this year however decries the fact that whistleblowers are not protected by any legislation. The report notes that the Corruption and Economic Crime Act protects whistle-blowers, but only in court proceedings.

Addressing trends in official corruption, the report says that major investigations of the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) in 2005 involved fraud, money laundering and public procurement.
