Makgadikgadi locals in poverty cycle

Makgadikgadi locals have been described as poor as they do not have any reliable source of earning a living even though the area's importance nationally and internationally has been recognised.

Makgadikgadi encompasses villages and settlements like Zoronga, Nata, Rakops, Gweta, Mopipi, Mmatshumo, Xhumaga and Mosu.

A study by the Department of Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism has revealed that households in the Makgadikgadi Framework Management Plan (MFMP) area have been forced to depend on government welfare and informal employment due to failing agricultural practices and lack of education in the area. Communities benefit from government welfare programmes such as the provision of food rations and the old age pension while informal employment includes casual work in construction and on fields as well as the selling of veldt products. They collect natural resources such as thatching grass, firewood, mophane worms and wild fruits for survival.
