At first she felt a slight pain in her throat. She dismissed it as a regular tonsil infection, which often afflicted her.

The pain worsened, especially during winter and on cold days. Bontle Modige, 26, was later diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer at 14 years of age.

"I had cancer for more than two years," she says.  The rare nasopharyngeal cancer affects nostrils and the oesophagus, making swallowing and breathing difficult. Modige says it does not spare the neck and head as well.
