Lerala loses mine, but retains botho

LERALA: Tucked away in the hinterland of the expansive Tuli Block, just a stone's throw away from Botswana's frontier with South Africa, lies Lerala. The village has largely remained in the background until recently when it was thrown an economic lifeline with the discovery of diamonds deposit.

Largely regarded as the capital of Tswapong, the village is known to pride itself in its culture built around the spirit of botho. That is one thing that will not go away even with the recent announcement of the closure of the Diamonex plant, just 20km from the village. In typical African culture, a visitor is treated with botho, which entails a warm welcome and respect.
