Is the government delusional?

FRANCISTOWN: It is now a habit for authorities to make proclamations that all is well in the country, even when it is not.

Such declarations are usually made through the state media which includes Btv, Radio Botswana, RB2 and Daily News. These have now been monopolised by government functionaries, especially since they were relocated to the Office of the President. In respect to the ongoing national public service strike, union leaders have been denied a platform to air their side of the story, and opposition party leaders are also not given the chance to give their views. On the contrary, President Ian Khama and his cronies are the only ones who tend to enjoy publicity in the state broadcaster.

This is quite typical of African countries, where the state media is essentially seen as a government mouthpiece while the private media is often seen as the voice of the opposition. Ever since the strike started on the 18th last month, the government has been denying that it has caused serious harm to the country's service delivery.
