How government can support writers

Historical background

Notwithstanding these problems, the Association established a Radio Programme - The Writers Corner - which continued broadcasting until late 1995. The Association had also initiated a regular Reading Session which encouraged established and aspirant writers to present their works in a forum of goodwill. It was here that writers also met on  common ground and critiqued each other's works.

In the first half of 1997, some members of the community met at the University of Botswana in an effort to resuscitate the Association. An Ad-Hoc Committee was elected. A Special General Meeting was called by this Committee in May 1997. Here a new National Executive Committee was mandated to carry out a number of tasks. One of these being the re-registration of the Association. On the 24th of October 1997, the Registrar of Societies ratified the new Constitution and now WABO is, once again, a legally registered entity, marking the second phase of its life that prepared it for the new millennium. This phase is marked by several workshops and new publications, most notably of the creative writing journal Mahube , which saw the light of day in 2007.
